Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered a tough defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 3rd match of IPL 2025 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on March 23. Despite a strong bowling effort, MI couldn’t defend their total as CSK clinched a 4-wicket victory in a thrilling encounter.

Mumbai Indians’ Struggle with the Bat

Batting first, MI posted a total of 155/9 in 20 overs, which proved insufficient against CSK’s batting lineup. The innings started on a disastrous note with Rohit Sharma (0) falling in the very first over to Khaleel Ahmed (4-0-29-3). While MI hoped for stability, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

Tilak Varma (31 off 25) and Suryakumar Yadav (29 off 26) were the only batters who put up a fight. However, Noor Ahmad (4-0-18-4) wreaked havoc, dismantling MI’s middle order. Despite a late effort from Deepak Chahar (28 off 15), MI couldn’t put up a challenging total.

MI’s Bowlers Put Up a Fight

Defending a low total, MI’s bowlers fought hard to keep CSK in check. Vignesh Puthur (4-0-32-3) was the standout performer, dismissing key batters like Ruturaj Gaikwad (53 off 26) and Shivam Dube (9 off 7). Will Jacks (4-0-32-1) and Deepak Chahar (2-0-18-1) also contributed with crucial wickets.

Despite their efforts, Rachin Ravindra (65 off 45)* anchored CSK’s chase, ensuring they reached the target in 19.1 overs. MI’s fielding and bowling remained sharp, but they lacked enough runs on the board to apply pressure on CSK’s experienced lineup.

Key Takeaways for MI

  1. Batting Struggles – MI needs more contributions from their top order to post competitive totals.
  2. Vignesh Puthur’s Breakthrough Performance – His three-wicket spell was a big positive for MI.
  3. Noor Ahmad’s Impact on MI’s Batting – MI batters struggled to counter his spin, leading to key dismissals.
  4. More Runs Needed from Senior Players – MI’s experienced batters like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav need to step up in crucial matches.

MI’s Road Ahead

With this loss, Mumbai Indians will need to regroup and work on their batting approach for upcoming matches. Their bowling unit showed promise, but a stronger batting display will be crucial to bouncing back in IPL 2025.
